In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
