The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
